What's Bonfires of Saint John/Hogueras festival?

Bonfires of Saint John/The Hogueras Festival take place in various cities around the coastal areas of Spain, such as Valencia, Calalonia, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and the most noteworthy celebration taking place in Alicante. Dating back to pre-Christian times the event honors the patron saint, St. John, through beach bonfires, fireworks, dancing, and the burning of large wooden and paper-mâché figures. Visitors will see people jumping over fire because as the traditions have it anyone that jumps over a bonfire three times will be cleansed. This event annually occurs between the 20th and 24th of June, depending on the location.
